Neck
liposuction

What is neck liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, which can improve a ‘turkey neck’ and eliminate a double chin, with long-lasting results. The procedure involves the use of an advanced syringe vacuum technique to contour the neck area, creating a firmer, smoother neckline and chin.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Neck liposuction will result in a natural looking, more youthful appearance. It is ideal for patients in their twenties to fifties, who may have a double chin or excess neck fat, but still have good skin elasticity.

SOME FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I plan for neck liposuction?

Before you make the decision to have this procedure, your surgeon will discuss whether the surgery is suitable for you, and what problem you’d like to correct, to ensure that you’ll have realistic expectations and will know what can be achieved.

He or she will need to know your medical history, and what medications you take.

You’ll have a physical examination of your neck and face and your surgeon will take photographs for reference. Many surgeons use software which can show the results that are possible and help you see what the final outcome will be.

What is the procedure for neck liposuction?
The procedure, which takes less than an hour, starts with two to three small incisions under the chin and behind the ears.

The surgeon inserts a thin cannula (tube) through these incisions and then vacuums out all the excess fat. This is followed by the re-sculpting of the neck area, which will achieve the new, natural looking contour.

How should I prepare for a neck liposuction?

Before your surgery you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You will also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

You should stop taking certain medication, like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs.
Avoid recreational drugs, and disclose to your surgeon any other medication you’re taking, since you may need to adjust these.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic, since you will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

Where will my neck liposuction be performed?
The surgery will be performed in one of our fully equipped operating theatres.
What anaesthetic will be used for my neck lift?
A neck liposuction procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia.
How do I recover from neck liposuction?
Most people who have this procedure are able to safely leave the clinic the same day after surgery and recovery will take just a few days.

You will have some swelling and bruising, but you will probably not experience much pain, although medication will help with any discomfort. Your healing will be helped with the use of a chin strap or compression garment.

What can I expect after my neck liposuction?

Apart from some swelling and bruising, you will not experience much discomfort. The results will be visible immediately, and they will become more visible as the swelling subsides. The most dramatic difference will be improved contour and definition, with a more youthful appearance.

When can I return to normal activities?
After a neck liposuction procedure, most patients recover sufficiently to return to work after a week, or even sooner, but you should avoid any strenuous activity and heavy lifting for the first three weeks.
What are the risks involved in neck liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a safe procedure with few risks and complications. Light swelling and bruising are normal and temporary, as is some general discomfort and changes in sensation in the neck area, as well as some scarring.

Some of the (small) risks include bruising, infection, change in skin sensation, fluid accumulation and irregular contours or asymmetry. There can also be dimpling or nerve damage. Your surgeon will discuss all the risks with you and give you advice on how to minimise risks and side effects.
